Title : Nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems and herbal medicines


Herbal medicines have been widely used around the world since ancient times. The advancement of phytochemical and phytopharmacological sciences has enabled elucidation of the composition and biological activities of several medicinal plant products. The effectiveness of many species of medicinal plants depends on the supply of active compounds. Most of the biologically active constituents of extracts, such as flavonoids, tannins, and terpenoids, are highly soluble in water, but have low absorption, because they are unable to cross the lipid membranes of the cells, have excessively high molecular size, or are poorly absorbed, resulting in loss of bioavailability and efficacy. Some extracts are not used clinically because of these obstacles. It has been widely proposed to combine herbal medicine with nanotechnology, because nanostructured systems might be able to potentiate the action of plant extracts, reducing the required dose and side effects, and improving activity. Nanosystems can deliver the active constituent at a sufficient concentration during the entire treatment period, directing it to the desired site of action. Conventional treatments do not meet these requirements. The purpose of this study is to review nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems and herbal medicines. Nanosized drug delivery systems for herbal drugs can potentially enhance the biological activity and overcome problems associated with plant medicines. However, significant challenges remain for implementation of clinically viable therapies in this field. Trials of novel methods to control the interactions of nanomaterials with biological systems represent some of the current challenges to translating these technologies to therapies. New challenges in the development of nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems include: the feasibility of scale-up processes that bring innovative therapeutic techniques to the market quickly, and the possibility of obtaining multifunctional systems to fulfill several biological and therapeutic requirements. Some additional new challenges include probing the targeting efficiency of nanoparticles, and satisfying international standards for their toxicology and biocompatibility.


Dr.Jhansee Mishra  is a proud Indian who was born and raised on Bhubaneswar ,Odisha,India. She received her B. Pharm ,M.Pharm  & Ph.D degree from different renowned University of India. She is working as an Assistant Professor in Institute of Pharmacy, V.B.S.Purvanchal University, India  . Her present research projects are focused on “ Poly herbal formulation and standardization of selected few medicinal plant having antidiabetic activity ”. Phytopharmacological work on active isolated constituents from Indian folklore medicine directed to explore their therapeutic potential and attempting on formulation of standardized product by following the modern herbal Ayurvedic monographs and international guidelines. She is spreading scientific knowledge in many national and international journals by quality research works. Her field of research focuses on formulation of herbal drugs, Pharmacognosy, pharmacological screening and standardization method development for herbals. She has more than 30 National and International publication, 5 books  and 3 patents in her credit. She is working as editors/reviewers of many reputed national and international journals. She served as life members of different association of pharmacy in India.She has delivered many invited talk in different national and International conference. She was invited as speaker in international conference on April 16-17, 2018 at Amsterdam,Netherlands and received most prestigious Young Scientist award. She also got Atal Sanmaan on occasion of Atal Vihari Jayati.More than 35 abstracts are published in various national and International conference globally like  Lasvegas(USA),Beijing(China) etc .She actively participate social activities and woman empowerment program like Aparajita 100 millions of smile, red cross blood donation camp,rastriya seva yojana and many more.
