Synergising Nanocellulose as “The Material of the Millennium”

Keynote · Virtual · Day 2

Abstract

About this talk

Nanocellulose has emerged as one of the most promising materials of the 21st century, distinguished by its exceptional mechanical strength, high modulus, low density, tunable surface chemistry, and inherent biodegradability. Derived from abundant and renewable plant‑based resources, nanocellulose offers a sustainable pathway for replacing fossil‑fuel‑derived materials, particularly plastics, while enabling advanced functionalities across diverse technological sectors. Its ability to contribute to essential societal needs—including food, housing, healthcare, education, energy, and environmental protection—positions it as a truly transformative “Material of the Millennium.”

This paper presents the superior properties and wide‑ranging applications of nanocellulose, with emphasis on its relevance to next‑generation materials, sustainable manufacturing, and innovation‑driven technologies. The techno‑economic challenges that currently limit large‑scale industrial adoption are analysed, including raw‑material variability, process energy demands, and cost competitiveness. Strategies for optimising raw‑material selection and production routes are discussed, covering mechanical, chemical, enzymatic, and hybrid processes. Particular attention is given to process synergy—integrating multiple production approaches to achieve optimal yield, quality, and cost efficiency.

In alignment with the World Nano 2027 theme, the paper highlights the emerging role of artificial intelligence as a powerful enabler for nanocellulose production.

Recent advances in nanocellulose applications in food, food‑packaging systems and the paper industry are specifically examined, demonstrating its critical relevance to global sustainability priorities such as food security, waste reduction, and environmentally responsible packaging. The paper outlines strategic pathways for integrating nanocellulose into future technologies, reinforcing its position as a cornerstone material for innovation in the evolving landscape of nanoscience and nanotechnology.
